Description |
Torah scroll, no. 880, owned by Czech Memorial Scrolls Trust, parchment scroll written in 1830 in the town of Prcice, rolled on wooden rollers. Report provided by Rabbi Menachem Youlus, sofer STA''M, Jewish Bookstore of Greater Washington, May 30, 2002: "I have reviewed Torah #88o, which was owned by the Czech Memorial. The Torah was written in Austria by a scribe from the school of Rav Nathan Rabinowitz. This Torah is approximately 170 years old. This was determined from the parchment, which is a type not in use during the last 100 years, as well as the type of ink used. Beit Yosef is the name of the font used and this is consistent with what is found in most Ashkenazic shuls. The parchment used is very thin and it began that way as well. We have registered this Torah using infrared stamping (#8805750) as well as the finger printing system. "It may well be that the Torah was written by Rabbi Rabinowitz himself. The handwriting is very close. The town it came from is now under investigation. We do have several possibilities. An exact determination may take 6 months. This Torah is appraised at $6500. It is a Holocaust Torah." |
